MEXICO: 500 where MADE there! About today's situation, nothing is really known... I went for honeymoon back in 2000 on a tour from Mexico City to Cancun and was surprised to see not less then 4 Pacers. Two in Mexico City itself (but could only get one on picture..), another in Puebla where so much I remember was the factory, driving down the opposite side of the road while I was eating a stupid Big Mac, I didn't had time to let the Mac go away to take a picture! And the last one was in Merida, a blue...at least it was a time ago as now it's more likely to be brown...rustbrown! Otherwise, there where a lot of Gremlin and Spirit around, almost one in each street! About 500 VAM Pacer where made in Mexico, with an uncommon 282 ci engine with not less then 174 HP! I wish I could get one of those! There is a Pacer people out there with another VAM Pacer, he is:(you can fellow the
links to Patterson's web site!)
Here a discussion board about the engine and other facts

Our club president once got to look at a Mexican Javelin. It had an inline
6 with a larger displacement than 258...somewhere around 270. The engine
was familiar looking but upon closer scrutiny had somewhat different
castings. The car had Rambler identification.
i've previously heard of 252 and 282 sixes; these would correspond to
the 232 and 258 with the bore opened up to ~3.92". the head was
reputed to have bigger ports than the amc vdersion, and slightly moved
valve locations to better accomodate 360/390 valves.
--
Although the '82 book shows inline-6s being built (red in color!) it is
not known whether VAM made V-8s.
i have a bellhousing that connects an amc t-10 to a '64-'71 6; i've
heard it popularly referred to as a 'mexican' bellhousing. someone else on
this list has a mexican 6 manifold that mounts a holley 2-bbl. these make
me think that vam put their effort into the 6 and didn't bother with a
v8...
If anybody has any more information to add to this, please let me
know...I've been trying to get some of my friends with family in Mexico to
find some sales brochures or ANYTHING, but no luck so far.
keep at it! i for one wait eagerly for anything you turn up.
Andrew Hay Date: 15 Oct 1996 15:05:15 EDT --I have a question. In Mexico, the AMC cars sold had an option to a
282 cu.in. six engine, which had the same appeareance than the 232/258.
Was the 282 a rebored 258? Was the 282 made or sold in the U.S.?
I'm the one that originally submitted the information about VAM with
the ultimate goal of researching and publishing a comprehensive article on
the Mexico operations in our local newsletter and AMO. But, I've been
scooped!!!
Larry Mitchell of AMC World Clubs has located a gentleman by the name
of Salvadore Diaz who used to work for VAM in Mexico City. Mr. Diaz is
writing a history of the VAM operations that is currently being published
in the AMX-tra, the national newsletter of AMC World Clubs. So far, only
the very early history (VAM actually grew out of Willys, not Nash!) has
been published but much more is to come. This will undoubtedly be the
ultimate source of information about the 282 and other aberrations once
it is fully published.

models built? As far as I know, only Hornet and Concord four door and two
door sedans were made. I heard rumors of an AMX, but would think that
would have been on the Concord body.
The 282 was never offered in the US. Were V-8s offered in Mexico? Now,
you say the outward appearance was the same as the 258. I would think that
the bore and stroke would have been altered to create that much
difference, though it has been standarad practice for AMC to only change
the stroke of the engines in the 199/232/258/242 family (the 4.0L used in
newer Jeeps uses basically the same block, and is 242 inches).

282 afaik, the 282 was a 258 bored out to about 3.92". there was an
earlier 252, which was an identically bored-out 232. they both were
mexico-only engines.
were any v8s available in mexico? i always assumed the 282 was in lieu
of v8 power.
and what transmission options were there? i've heard much of 'mexican'
bellhousings, used to attach the t-10 4-sp to '64-'71 [up here] sixes. i
know they're real because i have one, but it came from wisconsin. were
sixes with 4-speeds actually available in mexico?
did mexican sixes change bellhousing pattern in '72 as did u.s. sixes?
did they also switch from shaft rockers to ball-stud rockers as we did?

VAM ceased production in 1986. They were building Renaults by then. The
equivalent of Javelins, Matador Coupes, Concords (all body styles),
Gremlins, Spirits (all body styles), and a weird Spirit/Conc- ord hybrid
called the 'Lerma' were definitely built in Mexico, possibly others.
There were no V-8s. The 252-6 was red like our early 232, the 282 was
blue like our later sixes.

There is also a company called Clifford Research that makes headers and
4bbl intakes for these engines. I'm assuming here that the 282 is
identical (except bore) to the 258.. ports are the same size externally.
my humble opinion -- the offenhaeuser 4bbl manifold is the best. all
the runners are divided horizontally, with the bottom half fed from the
carb primaries and the top half fed from the secondaries. this makes for
higher mixture velocity and better running at light throttle [eg. only
primaries open]. also, it -will- work with the stock exhaust manifold,
which probably counts for little in mexico but means a lot to us in the
frozen north... ;^>

to have some exhaust pipe custom bent. Any turbo shop (look for diesel
truck dealers) would be able to recommend a size and give tips on
installation. A Paxton centrifugal blower would be nice also.. there ARE
kits for Jeeps, but I don't know a dealer right off.

Best thing is to get a 244 (4.oL) head for the 258, complete with FI
and computer! Chrysler also makes a retrofit kit for Jeeps, but I'd think
you could get a junkyard motor and all for the same price. The 244 puts
out 190HP with direct FI. That would be VERY NICE in your everyday Concord
or Pacer... as good as a mild 304 at any rate.
